Is Acupuncture an Eligible Health Spending Account Expense in Canada?
Acupuncture treatments are eligible under your Health Spending Account in certain provinces. If you are in an eligible province and your provider is a licensed acupuncturist, the treatment qualifies.
Where It's Eligible
Acupuncturists are recognized as authorized practitioners only in the following provinces:
- Alberta
- British Columbia
- Newfoundland and Labrador
- Ontario
If you are outside these provinces, acupuncture treatments cannot be claimed through your HSA.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners
If you receive acupuncture from a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner in British Columbia or Ontario, that also qualifies.
TCM practitioners are recognized as authorized practitioners in both provinces, giving patients in BC and Ontario additional flexibility in who they can see and still claim the expense.
What's Not Eligible
The treatment session is what qualifies. The following do not:
- Herbs, tinctures, or remedies provided or sold during your visit
- Natural medicine or take-home products
- Any other products the clinic sells
If your receipt combines the treatment fee with products, only the service portion is eligible.
What to Keep
A receipt showing the date of treatment, the provider's name and registration details, and the amount paid for the session. Submit through your Hiveworks account and claim any unpaid balance after other coverage.
