Is Massage Therapy an HSA Eligible Expense in Canada?
Massage therapy is covered under your Health Spending Account only in certain provinces.
What's Covered
Medically necessary massage therapy performed by a registered massage therapist or massage therapist acting within the scope of their professional training is eligible in provinces where the CRA recognizes them as authorized practitioners.
Provincial Eligibility
Massage therapy is only eligible when performed in the following provinces:
- British Columbia
- New Brunswick
- Newfoundland and Labrador
- Ontario
- Prince Edward Island
It is not eligible in Alberta, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, or the Yukon as per the CRA.
Eligibility is based on where the service is performed, not where you live. If you receive massage therapy from a registered therapist while in an eligible province, the expense qualifies regardless of your home province.
What's Not Eligible
- Oils, tools, or equipment purchased at the clinic
- Entry fees or payments for access to a wellness space
- Any products recommended or sold by your therapist during a session
What you are paying for must be a specific therapeutic service that has been provided by a licensed practitioner.
What You Need to Submit
- A receipt from your therapist showing the date of service and amount paid
- The receipt should include the therapist's name and registration or licence details
- Upload and submit through your Hiveworks account
The unpaid portion after any group benefits or spousal plan is also claimable.
