How HSA Eligibility Works

One of two things guide almost every eligibility question: whether the practitioner is recognized in your province, or whether the expense itself qualifies under the CRA's METC rules.

Eligible expenses are based on the METC list
At least 90% of expenses reimbursed through an HSA must be eligible under the CRA’s Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC) rules.

Practitioner recognition is province specific
The service must be performed in a province in which the practitioner is eligible.

The service must be a medical service
Diagnostic, therapeutic or rehabilitative care within the practitioner's professional scope qualifies.

Products vs services
Many clinics sell eligible services alongside ineligible products. The appointment may qualify while supplements, retail items or access fees bought at the same time do not.

Prepaid treatment can be eligible
Prepaid packages can be eligible when they are for eligible medical services that will be provided during the year. Membership fees or access fees that are not payment for eligible medical services are not eligible.

Documentation decides the claim
Some expenses need a prescription, some need written certification from a practitioner, and a few need Form T2201. The tool above tells you which applies.
