Are Braces and Orthodontics Covered by Your HSA in Canada?
Braces are one of the bigger dental expenses a family will face, often running several thousand dollars with limited or no coverage under most group benefit plans. Your Health Spending Account covers orthodontic work in full, with no annual cap specific to orthodontics.
What's Covered
Any medically necessary orthodontic service performed by a licensed dentist or orthodontist is eligible. That includes:
- Traditional metal braces
- Ceramic braces
- Invisalign and other clear aligner treatments
- Retainers
- Other orthodontic appliances
What's Not Covered
Orthodontic work for purely cosmetic reasons is not eligible. Orthodontic treatment must have a functional component. If your orthodontist has recommended treatment, it will generally qualify.
Provincial Eligibility
Orthodontic treatment is listed directly as an eligible medical expense and applies consistently across all provinces and territories. There are no provincial exceptions.
What You Need to Submit
- A receipt or invoice from your orthodontist showing the treatment, date of service, and amount paid
- If you're paying in installments, submit each payment as it's made
- If another insurer covered part of it, include the explanation of benefits showing the unpaid balance
- Upload and submit through your Hiveworks account
The unpaid portion after any group benefits or spousal plan is claimable.
