Are GLP-1s like Ozempic® HSA Eligible?
Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro®, Saxenda® and others are among the most commonly discussed prescriptions in Canada, and at $200 to $400 per month, they're also one of the bigger out-of-pocket expenses Canadians are looking to address.
The good news is straightforward: if your doctor prescribed it and you filled it at a licensed Canadian pharmacy, it is an eligible expense under your Health Spending Account.
Are GLP-1 Medications HSA Eligible in Canada?
Yes. Prescription drugs are eligible for reimbursement through a Health Spending Account when prescribed by a licensed Canadian practitioner.
GLP-1 medications are prescription-only in Canada, which means if you have a valid prescription and a pharmacy receipt, you can submit the claim the same way you would any other prescription drug.
There is no additional requirement beyond that.
A Word of Caution
If you purchased through a grey-market or compounded source not authorized by Health Canada without a prescription, your expense will not be eligible.
What You Need to Submit a Claim
Submitting a GLP-1 claim through your Hiveworks HSA is no different that any other prescription:
- A valid prescription from a licensed Canadian practitioner
- A pharmacy receipt showing the drug name, dispense date, and amount paid
Upload your receipt and submit through your Hiveworks account like you would with any other claim
That's it.
With generic GLP-1 options expected to enter the Canadian market in 2026, costs will likely come down. An HSA however will remain the most tax-efficient way to pay for them.
